  1. Mr Kirkman was my class teacher at Malvern Junior School from 1960 to 1962. I, along with many of my school friends, played in the school chess team and took part in the Liverpool Junior Schools Chess Championship and the knockout competition at the Liverpool Collegiate (in 1961 and 1962). In the spring of 1962, I was a member of the chess team which went to London, staying in Stockwell and playing against some London schools. I have always looked back on these times with very fond memories and firmly believe that this experience has very much helped to shape my character and Influence the way I have lived my life since. I wouldn’t have wished it any other way and owe a debt of gratitude to Mr Kirkman for providing such a positive influence.
