Liverpool make it to the Knotty Ash cup Final

Liverpool Chess Club make it to the final of the Knotty Ash cup for the first time in how long – no-one can remember, thats how long!
Liverpool had the tightest of ties once again drawing with Fazakerly but winning the match on board count once again!
The match finished 2.5 – 2.5 with wins for Peter Lipka, Mike Clarke and a great draw for Tom Iveson and defeats for Jim Gallagher and Tony Brennan
The results started with Tony Brennan (Our Knotty ash cup specialist) who lost in a very tight game but faded in the end game. A good while later Mike Clarke made his slight advantage grind out a win with a back rank attack that was unstoppable to make the match 1-1
Then Tom Iveson playing a very tidy player was behind in the endgame by a few pawns but managed to find a perpetual check to claim an excellent draw, big result.
Peter Lipka was also an exchange down after being a piece up earlier in the game but somehow pushed his extra pawns towards the enemy king and find a mate that was not expected to win the game and with it the match on board count regardless of how the last game finished
Jim G played the English defence against another very good player who was ranked 145 a few seasons ago and in what should have been a drawn position got caught in a mate when his opponent only had 45 seconds left on his clock, Jim only have 90 seconds left
So the match finished level but Liverpool go through on board count as they won on the highest boards and onto the Final we go on the 9th may, well done all who have got use there on this game and the previous rounds
The internal games saw a few rounds of the swiss played
Peter Leonard having a real go at Frank Ryan but Frank came through for the win in the end
The top of the table clash saw leader Paul Brown lose out to Tony Morley (detail to follow) and Gaile got a win in a very close game with Plamen
Other players had friendlies with Sean Frost, Phil Taylor, Nazar playing a few games
The Liverpool juniors also had a good night early on with some games and some tactical training on tough middle game positions which we will do much more of
Great night and great victory in what is proving to be a very successful season so far
