Rev John Owen was President of Liverpool Chess Club 1870-1871 and Vice President in 1889 and was regarded as second only to Amos Burn at the club.
In 1858 he famously won a game against Paul Morphy as black using what became known as Owen’s defence (1.e4 b6) this resulted in a tournament between the two which Morphy won 6-1
During the 1862 London Round Robin Tournament he finished Third ahead of future world champion Wilhelm Steinitz and was the only player to win against the tournament winner Adolf Anderssen who was considered world number one for most of the 1850s/1860s period
