Amos Burn was President of Liverpool Chess Club 1888 -1892 during the period known as the Golden Age for the club.He is without doubt the strongest and most famous chess player ever to play for Liverpool Chess Club. He was regarded as one of the worlds leading players of the late 19th Century and was ranked world number 2 in 1876 behind Wilhelm Steinitz. He had famous victories against Alekhine, Lasker, JH Blackburn, Chigorin and Liverpool Chess clubs Dr John Owen. The Burn variation of the French defence is named after him (1.e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 dxe4)
